At MADEX 2025, Hanwha Systems unveiled a range of AI-powered naval technologies that should assist the Republic of Korea Navy in tackling its future challenges.
Hanwha Systems has been developing various sensors and combat management systems (CMS) for the Republic of Korea Navy. In recent years, the company has further advanced its CMS technologies by integrating emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence into its systems.
Advanced Integrated Bridge System
At MADEX 2025, Hanwha Systems showcased a new cockpit-style Integrated Bridge System developed to address manpower shortages in the Republic of Korea Navy. Departing from the traditional wide, linear bridge layout that requires a large crew, this compact system enables just two operators to manage the vessel via three main integrated displays. These displays provide real-time monitoring of critical ship systems, including navigation and Hanwha Systems’ Engineering Control System (ECS), and include convenient features such as preset screen configurations tailored to the current situation and mission. Hanwha System expects crew demands to be cut by up to 25%.
AI-powered CMS
In addition to its Integrated Bridge System (IBS) for smart bridges, Hanwha Systems also unveiled a more developed version of the AI-powered CMS they designed to reduce crew requirements and individual workload within a surface ship’s Combat Information Center (CIC). The prototype of the AI-powered CMS was showcased during MADEX 2023, and over the years it has developed into a more sophisticated system. Tailored for next-generation crewed vessels, Hanwha Systems’ AI-powered CMS leverages artificial intelligence and automation to process signals and data from air-search radars, surface-search radars, and EO/IR sensors. The system automatically identifies targets, distinguishes between hostile, friendly, and civilian vessels, significantly reducing the burden of manual tasks traditionally performed by multiple operators.
The CMS also features threat modeling based on sensor-identified information, automated engagement option analysis, and real-time fire control adjustments to improve the accuracy of naval gunfire. Furthermore, to enhance seamless cooperation between the crew and the AI-powered CMS, Hanwha Systems has integrated a communication interface based on large language model (LLM) technology.
Hanwha Systems also unveiled a submarine variant of its AI-powered CMS. This version incorporates AI-based interpolation capabilities to compensate for signal loss in sonar data, enabling more accurate target detection and prediction of target’s course and movement. Additionally, during periscope surveillance, the system uses AI to enhance visibility during bad weather conditions and low light.
The new advanced CMS features are expected to be added in Hanwha Systems’ CMS Baseline 4.0, which identifies Korea’s next-generation destroyer, KDDX, as the first vessel to receive such upgrades. Hanwha Systems hopes these capabilities will also be included in the upcoming FFX Batch-IV frigates, thereby further expanding the application of AI-powered technologies across the ROK Navy’s future surface fleet.
